Happy Birthday Youngstown

It’s history in the making as Penguin City Brewing Company is teaming up with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and Youngstown CityScape to proudly announce the release of a new brew during “Happy Birthday Youngstown!” on Friday, June 27, at Penguin City Taproom. Penguin City has partnered with the Renner Brewing legacy—Youngstown’s original and oldest brewery, and will officially release Renner: Old Bavaria during the “Happy Birthday Youngstown” event. At 5:00pm, the public is invited to join the fun for this historic brew resurrection.
“This collaboration is about more than beer—it’s about legacy,” said Aspasia Lyras, Co-Owner of Penguin City Brewing. “We’re proud to work with the Renner family to honor Youngstown’s brewing history and bring this iconic name back to life.”
“Historically, Youngstown has a long tradition of great breweries and great brewing. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate John Young and our city’s 229th birthday,” remarked MVHS Director Bill Lawson. “For nearly a decade, we’ve been throwing a birthday party for our city,” noted CityScape Director Sharon Letson. “This landmark collaboration is a great way to mix history, tradition and our beautiful downtown.”
Renner — A Legacy Brewed Back to Life. This historic revival brings together one of the city’s newest breweries with one of its oldest names in beer. The Renner family, whose brewing roots in Youngstown date back over a century, approached Penguin City to breathe new life into the brand. The result: a meaningful partnership that blends heritage, craftsmanship, and hometown pride. From this landmark collaboration comes the first beer in the new Renner series, Old Bavaria, a Bavarian-Style Pilsner honoring the Renner family’s German roots. Crisp, clean, and classic—this beer is a tribute to the enduring grit and hardworking spirit that defines Youngstown.
This special release marks the beginning of the Renner Beer Series, with more historic styles to come—each one brewed with respect for the past and excitement for the future. The beer will be available at the event, in the taproom, and at select retailers throughout the Valley.
