Student Press Freedom Day – YSU

February 23 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST

Journalism students will present a program on student press freedom on February 23 from 1:00pm-2:00pm in the Schwebel Lounge in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.

The gathering is part of a national observance designed to celebrate the contributions of student journalists and support their independence without censorship or threats to their advisers. The event slogan is: “Bold journalism; brave advocacy.” Organizers call upon elected officials to restore and protect student press freedom. Sponsors of the local event are the Anderson Program in Journalism at YSU, The Business Journal, The Jambar, Jambar TV, the YSU Chapter of the Society of Collegiate Journalists, WKBN 27 First News and The Youngstown Press Club.

The presentation is free and open to the public. The first 50 people at the gathering will receive a Student Press Law Center button.
The Washington, D.C.-based SPLC defends the First Amendment and free press rights of student journalists and their advisers.

The Youngstown Press Club was re-established in 2018 to promote journalism and other communication-related professions in the Mahoning Valley.
