YOUNGSTOWN – Lillian Andrews, a student at Boardman High School, has won the Youngstown Press Club’s Scholastic Journalist of the Year award and the accompanying $100 prize.

She was among 55 students from seven Mahoning Valley high schools to enter the club’s first Scholastic Journalism Awards competition.

Struthers High School and the Youngstown City Schools’ Choffin Career Center tied as winners in the Best News Publication, Broadcast or Website category; and each will receive $100 to be used in their journalism or student media programs.

Honorable mentions in that category went to Ursuline and Badger high schools.

Winners and honorable mentions in other categories were:

* Best News Article – Amira Brown, Cardinal Mooney High School, winner; Akari Yoshiike, Salem High School, and Gianna Bonini, Struthers High School, honorable mentions.

* Best Feature Article – Chayce Giddens, Cardinal Mooney, winner; Madison Dowd, Salem High School, and Aviana Esparra, Ursuline, honorable mentions.

* Best Sports News Story – Ben Oddis, Cardinal Mooney, winner; Andonia Kavouras, Struthers, honorable mention.

* Best Sports Feature Article – James Mitchell, winner; Addison Kowacich, honorable mention, both at Boardman High School.

* Best Editorial, Column or Opinion Piece – Peyton Campbell, Cardinal Mooney, and Leah Markotan, Struthers, tied as winners.

* Best Layout and Design – Harper Liller and Lola Gordiejew, Boardman, winners.

The contest was sponsored by WKBN-TV, The Vindicator, Andrea Wood and Dennis LaRue, and the Anderson Program in Journalism at Youngstown State University.

A panel of nine press club members judged the entries.

The club plans to expand the contest next year and get more schools involved.

Founded in 1902 and re-established in 2018, the Youngstown Press Club promotes journalism and related professions in the Mahoning Valley.
