Lauren Runion, a junior at Canfield High School, will represent U.S. Representative Bill Johnson’s office in the United States Capitol as a winner in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery.
Local Art Organizations Receive Funding from the State of Ohio
“Thank you to all of the students and high schools who participated in this year’s Congressional Art Competition – and, congratulations to Lauren Runion, who was selected as the winner from Eastern Ohio,” Bill Johnson said. “The quality of the work submitted by our students is a credit to the art teachers at our local high schools. I will be proud to see Miss Runion’s artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol alongside other winners from around the United States.”
Lauren’s artwork, titled “Rely on Yourself,” was composed using colored pencils. The piece depicts a girl braiding another girl’s hair. Her art instructor at Canfield High School is Mr. Kevin Hoopes.
This year, the office received a record number of submissions – over 100. The students’ artwork was judged by an independent panel during the week of May 1.
6th Congressional District Art Competition for Eastern Ohio High School Students Announced
In addition, a “People’s Choice” winner will be selected via votes on Congressman Johnson’s Facebook page beginning tonight, Tuesday, May 9th; work from eight high schools will be featured. The artwork receiving the most “likes” by Sunday, May 14th at 11:59pm will be named the “People’s Choice” winner, and will be displayed in one of the Congressman’s district offices.
