Youngstown State University student Nadia Zarbaugh has built her college experience around academics, leadership and service, and now she is taking on a role that reaches well beyond campus, according to a release.
Zarbaugh, a biological sciences major on the BaccMed track from Poland, Ohio, and a member of the Sokolov Honors College, was selected as an associate editor for UReCA: The National Collegiate Honors Council Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, a nationally recognized undergraduate journal. She reviews undergraduate scholarship, takes part in academic publishing training and works alongside student editors from other institutions.
The work began with a summer retreat in Montana that included intensive training on reviewing submissions across many disciplines. Editors also volunteered on environmental cleanup supporting wildlife conservation in Glacier National Park and other natural areas, and heard from park rangers about the park’s history and ecology.
Zarbaugh says the position has helped her build communication, critical thinking and scholarly evaluation skills, and connect with students and faculty outside YSU. Mollie Hartup, director of the Sokolov Honors College, said the appointment reflects the value of learning beyond the classroom.
Outside of her editorial work, Zarbaugh serves as a student member of the YSU Board of Trustees and is involved with the American Medical Women’s Association, the American Medical Student Association and Sight for All United.
