Michael Latessa, Executive Director of The Rich Center for Autism, has etched his name in Youngstown State University (YSU) history as the first individual ever to earn a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree while also excelling as a national champion student-athlete. Latessa’s historic achievement was completed in December 2024 when he graduated with his doctorate degree, capping a remarkable journey of academic success and athletic distinction.

Latessa’s unparalleled accomplishments are rooted in both his academic excellence and his commitment to athletic achievement. A proud member of the 1997 YSU Penguin football team, Latessa helped guide the team to a national championship under the leadership of legendary head coach Jim Tressel. His contributions to YSU’s storied athletic legacy, combined with his outstanding academic pursuits, make him a shining example of what it means to be a Penguin.

“Michael Latessa is a true embodiment of the values that define Youngstown State University,” said YSU President Bill Johnson. “His dedication to both his studies and his athletic career sets a standard of excellence for all of us. He has not only achieved the highest levels of academic success, but he has also played an integral role in advancing the mission of The Rich Center for Autism, showing that leadership extends beyond the classroom and the playing field.”

Latessa’s support for YSU continues to extend beyond his own achievements. As Executive Director of The Rich Center for Autism, he remains deeply involved in the university community and continues to make a positive impact through his philanthropic efforts. His leadership, both on and off the field, serves as an inspiration for current and future generations of YSU students.

“Doctor Latessa deserves every bit of credit for his amazing accomplishments,” said Rich Center for Autism Coordinator Jake Ellis. “He’s a perfect example of Youngstown and YSU values. He’s Youngstown born and raised and exudes determination, perseverance, and leadership. He does it all while keeping one of the calmest and positive demeanors I’ve ever seen in an individual.”

Latessa’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact of perseverance, dedication, and service to others. His legacy at YSU will forever be celebrated, as he continues to inspire fellow Penguins with his exceptional accomplishments.
