These remarkable individuals exemplify the spirit of the Athena by empowering others by professional excellence, community service, and dedication to empowering other women. Their achievements reflect the strength and resilience of the Mahoning Valley, and we celebrate their contributions to creating a more dynamic future for our region. Congratulations to each nominee.
Teri Ely
With more than 30 years of experience dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, Teri Ely is Executive Director and founder of Veterans’ Outreach, a nonprofit that serves veterans across multiple states. Teri has expanded the organization to include a 16,000-square-foot facility in Youngstown that houses programs like the Heroes’ Closet, VO Depot thrift store and Freedom Food Pantry.
Teri organizes the annual Stars and Strikes Bowling Event and an annual golf scramble to raise money, as well as resource fairs, fundraisers, and car shows to raise awareness and funds for veterans services. A WKBN Hometown Hero and finalist for the Most Remarkable Women award, she is praised for her tireless advocacy. Teri’s deep personal connection to the military and commitment to serving others guide her mission to make the Valley a better place for all.
Stephanie Shapiro
Stephanie Shapiro lives by a “community over everything” mantra. As owner of Sherman Creative Promotions, she has created jobs, supported local organizations, and offered internships to help others grow professionally.
Stephanie counts her acquisition of Sherman Creative as one of the big milestones in her career and personal life. Taking ownership of the business that offers promotional items and branded apparel that are made in America reinforced her confidence and capabilities.
Stephanie is on the board of the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and Potential Development trivia committee. Recognized with the JCC Abe Harshman Young Leadership Award, she continues to lead by example and sees her business not just as a career, but as a tool to inspire, empower, and uplift her community.
Sarah Chill
Sarah Chill, Education Program Director for the Ursuline Sisters Mission, oversees daily operations and staff for three impactful education programs serving college students, school-age children, and immigrant families. Under her leadership, since 2022, the Mission doubled student participation, combined three programs into one, and expanded partnerships with schools, healthcare providers, and social service agencies.
Sarah, who holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and media studies, as well as master’s degrees in interdisciplinary communications and business leadership, all from Youngstown State University, is passionate about education in all forms and believes it “has the power to change the world.”
Sarah was twice named Employee of the Month in previous roles, and her dedication to community empowerment earned her recognition as one of the Mahoning Valley’s 25 under 35.
