As the holiday season begins, communities everywhere look forward to cherished traditions that bring warmth and joy to cold winter nights. In Downtown Youngstown, one such tradition has taken on a life of its own over the last couple of years, captivating locals and visitors alike with its festive spirit and sense of community. We’re talking about the beloved event, The Miracle on the Federal, hosted annually by The Federal restaurant, a staple of downtown dining and social life.
Located on WEST Federal Street, The Federal restaurant has long been a popular gathering place in Youngstown, offering good food, drinks and atmosphere that celebrates the city’s vibrant downtown culture. However, during the holiday season, the restaurant transforms into something truly magical—a Winter Wonderland.
Since its inception, The Miracle on the Federal has become a hallmark of holiday celebrations in the city, attracting families, friends and even first-time visitors eager to experience the Christmas spirit in a unique way.
“It was actually my brother Dan’s idea, though I hate to admit it,” laughed Sophia Martini, the manager of The Federal. “One day we were all sitting around talking, and he casually mentioned that we’d always talked about decorating the restaurant for the holidays. From that moment, the tradition was born. We all took the lead and made it happen, and now, every year, we transform the entire space into something really special.” Sophia credits her brother for bringing the festive spirit to life, a tradition that customers now eagerly anticipate each season.
The restaurant is decked out in festive holiday décor, with twinkling lights, Christmas trees, garlands and ornaments. Visitors can enjoy a seasonal menu featuring holiday-themed drinks like jingle juice, Jack Frost Freeze and more, along with special menu items that capture the season.
What makes The Miracle on the Federal even more special is its commitment to giving back. Each year they do a toy drive for kids and in 2023, collected over 100 toys for less fortunate kids in the area with this year’s goal to collect 125.
“We do it in memory of our friend Mohammed, who passed away in 2019. He was our co-worker and the manager at The Federal, as he always gave to our toy drive every year,” said Sophia Martini, Manager of The Federal.
The Miracle on the Federal is about more than just holiday cheer—it’s about community. Events like this one play a crucial role in fostering a sense of togetherness and civic pride, as people from all walks of life come together. “We really believe it’s such a special way to bring people together during the holiday season,” shared Martini.
She went on to mention, that “For us, it’s all about creating traditions—that’s what we cherish most about our own lives, our Christmas memories and the rituals that bring us closer. We’re so excited to offer that same experience to others and love seeing how it has become a tradition for so many families.”
Don’t worry if the online reservations appear as sold out—they get cancellations frequently. So there’s still a good chance a spot could open up!
“Even if you don’t have a reservation, you can still walk in for bar seating or limited walk-in tables,” explained Martini, “Just because people think we’re completely sold out, that’s not the case. While the reservation system might show we’re fully booked, we often get cancellations and can accommodate walk-ins as well.”
