Two foundations administered by Huntington Bank have made substantial grants in support of Youngstown Press Club activities, according to a press release.
The Edward Barr Foundation has given $10,000 for the club’s speaker series; and the Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation has donated $4,000 for the club’s scholarship fund.
The release went on to say that these foundations “have so tangibly supported our efforts to promote journalism and communication-related professions in the Valley,” said Lori A. Factor, club president.
“Their gifts will allow us to continue our robust scholarship program while creating an even stronger speaker series. We are strengthened by their generosity,” she added. The Barr Foundation, which was established in 1973, has funded a broad range of arts, cultural and social service organizations in Youngstown.
Speakers at press club events have included prominent journalists and authors, a community activist, various academic experts on journalism and related fields, and a First Amendment expert.
The speaker series will feature seven events in 2024.
The club’s scholarship fund, which was established this year, makes awards to college juniors and seniors residing in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, who are majoring in journalism or a related field.
The fund awarded two $2,000 scholarships this year and will do the same next year. Besides the Gelbman Foundation grant, the scholarships are funded by club membership dues, proceeds from club events and direct donations from individuals and the club’s corporate sponsors.
Frank Gelbman received his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1943, joined the Army and graduated from the Army School of Neuropsychiatry.
In 1949, Dr. Gelbman returned to Youngstown, where he was in private practice until his retirement in 1985.
Dr. Gelbman and his wife, Pearl, contributed to many Mahoning Valley non-profit organizations during their lifetimes; and their foundation, which was established in 2005, continues to do so.
The Youngstown Press Club was re-established in 2018 to promote journalism and other communication-related professions in the Mahoning Valley.
