Summer Exhibitions – McDonough Museum of Art
June 25 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm EDT
The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, Youngstown State University’s Center of Contemporary Art, will open its summer schedule with three new and exciting exhibitions. Paper, Paint & Canvas by Sharon Dundee, CURIOSITIES by Ron Krygowski and I Just Like You: New & Inspiring Fiber Art curated by Heather Seno will be on display May 31 through July 20. An opening reception for all the exhibitions will be held on Friday, May 31 from 5-7pm.
Sharon Dundee was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her BFA from Youngstown State University where she followed two divergent paths – painting/art history and graphic design/desktop publishing – the latter became her main career focus for more than 30 years. Specializing in abstract-expressionist analogue collage and mixed media painting, she has exhibited her work nationally and won numerous awards. Of her art Dundee states, “My goal as an artist is to create new life from old forms. By mining a wealth of ‘decaying’ material (discarded photos, old newsprint, books stripped of their covers, etc.) I seek to repurpose it. Through my work, I aim to connect the past and the present and hope that it may inspire the future.”
In describing his work artist Ron Krygowski states, “I have always been curious and drawn to world cultures and art. I am inspired by fantasy, Catholic imagery, costume, and embellishment with a philosophy of ‘more is more’.” Krygowski grew up in Girard and received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. While living and working in Houston Texas, he actively created and displayed artwork at Alpha 2 Omega Gallery, the Art League of Houston, and the Texas Renaissance Festival. Returning to Ohio, he has been working in clay at Studio 83 and Trumbull Art Gallery (TAG). Krygowski has shown in the area artist exhibitions at the Butler and TAG, had a one man show at The Hope Center for Art and Technology and is a member of Random Acts of Artists.
The I Just Like You: New & Inspiring Fiber Art exhibition is curated by Heather Seno. Currently studying User Experience Design at Kent State University, Seno is an arts and design professional with a Bachelor of Fine Arts focused in Interdisciplinary Studio Arts from Youngstown State University. She has and continues to be a major force in the arts community of Youngstown. Of the art and artists in the exhibition Seno states, “I Just Like You: New and Inspiring Fiber Art displays fiber artists working in a new way and often utilizing interdisciplinary backgrounds combined with innovative technology to assist with their creation process. These contemporary artists are expanding the tradition of fiber art with unique material use, production modes, and abstract compositions.”
The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public. The McDonough Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00am–4:00pm.
