Bites and Bits of History

January 16 @ 12:00 pm EST

Mahoning Valley Historical Society continues its 150th year celebration into the new year. The celebration will last until September 2025 with loads of history about the society and the Mahoning Valley, and events to celebrate this milestone.

Measles, scarlet fever, pneumonia, influenza, and tuberculosis were some of the challenges facing local healthcare workers in the early part of the 20th century. Join Mahoning Valley Historical Society at noon for Bites and Bits of History on Thursday, January 16 when Cassie Nespor, Curator of the Melnick Medical Museum and YSU Archives, discusses, “Caring for the sick: Youngstown physicians, nurses, and hospitals from 1910 – 1920.” This presentation will discuss the modernization of the two hospitals in Youngstown as well as the home care provided by doctors and nurses in the city. It will also include a summary of Base Hospital 31 which operated in eastern France during WWI and was funded and staffed by people from Youngstown.

Bring your lunch and join us in the Tyler History Center’s Thomas Ballroom for this free educational event. Bites and Bits of History Lunchtime programs are sponsored by the John and Loretta Hynes Foundation.
