Tressel’s Lifetime of Leadership, Faith and Service

For more than four decades, Jim Tressel has been a symbol of leadership, humility, and service, both on and off the field. From his championship years at Youngstown State University and The Ohio State University to his transformative leadership as YSU President, Tressel’s legacy is built not on wins and titles, but on people, those he’s mentored, guided, and inspired.

When asked what lesson from his parents has stayed with him throughout his life, he doesn’t hesitate to share a quote that’s shaped his journey; “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” That sentiment, rooted in compassion and connection—has defined every chapter of his story.

Over the span of more than 37 years in coaching and leadership, Tressel’s philosophy was grounded in a belief that success starts with caring for people first. Whether mentoring student-athletes or working alongside staff and students as a university leader, he emphasized service, character, and faith as the foundation for growth. “One of my favorite lessons,” he recalls, quoting Albert Einstein, “is that concern for man and his fate must form the chief interest of all technical endeavors, never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations.”

While his coaching record speaks for itself, Tressel measures success differently. “The greatest accomplishments,” he says, “are seeing our former players become great husbands, fathers, leaders, and contributors to society.”

In 2014, his career took a different turn when he became President of Youngstown State University. At the time, he was serving as Vice President at the University of Akron when the YSU presidency became available. “Timing is everything,” he reflects. “YSU was looking for stability and someone they knew loved the university and the region. Even though my experience wasn’t as comprehensive as some candidates, they knew I loved the place.”

That love for Youngstown, and for people, has always been at the heart of his decisions. His leadership, whether in athletics or academia, has been guided by what he calls his core values: gratitude, love, work ethic, listening, and constant evaluation.

Tressel is quick to admit he’s made his share of mistakes. But each one, he says, taught him something vital. “Mistakes happened when I was trying to do too much and wasn’t being as thorough as I should be. It helped me slow down and execute better.” The hardest choices, though, have always been the ones involving people. “Personnel decisions are always the hardest. They taught me that it’s impossible to communicate too much with your people.”

In February 2025, Tressel was confirmed as Ohio’s 67 the Lieutenant Governor under Governor Mike DeWine. While his primary focus is on aligning education and workforce development across the state, he also launched a student physical-fitness initiative aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles for Ohio’s youth.

When asked if he would do anything differently if given the chance to start over, his answer is simple: “No.” Each step, all the wins, the failures, the pivots, has helped shaped his path.

Through it all, his motivation has remained constant, to serve, uplift, and lead by example. Faith and family have always been at the center of his resilience and outlook. “So many great mentors have influenced me, beginning with my parents,” he reflects. When asked which figures he would most want to meet, his answer reveals much about the kind of leader he strives to be: “Jesus, Abraham Lincoln, John Wooden, extraordinary servant leaders.”

When all is said and done, Tressel hopes his legacy will be remembered not for the trophies or titles, but for the values he lived by. “That we cared… we listened… we loved… and we did what we said we would do.”

And when it comes to his daily philosophy, Tressel shares one final thought that perfectly captures his grounded spirit: “Paradise is where I am.”

Through every season of life, on the field, in the classroom, and across the community, Jim Tressel continues to remind us that true success is found not in accolades, but in caring, serving, and leading with heart.
