In 1968\, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill. The bill moved several federal holidays to Mondays creating three-day weekends. During the debate on the bill\, one proposal suggested George Washington’s birthday be renamed Presidents Day to honor the birthdays of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Washington’s birthday is February 22nd and Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th. Although Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states\, it was never an official federal holiday. Following much discussion\, Congress rejected the name change. \nDespite the rejection\, soon after the bill went into effect in 1971\, and the observance of Washington’s birthday shifted to the third Monday in February\, gradually Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name. Over time\, the observance came to be known to many as a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln. DESCRIPTION:Observed each year on February 14th\, National Donor Day (also known as  National Organ Donor Day) aims to increase awareness about organ donation and the lives it saves. In the United States\, more than 120\,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ donation. \nLocal Non-Profit Announces Tri-County Women of Impact\n#NationalDonorDay\nGive the gift of Life. \nThe observance focuses on five different types of donations:  Organs – Tissues – Marrow – Platelets – Blood.  Many nonprofit health organizations sponsor blood and marrow drives and organ/tissue sign-ups across the nation. Approximately every two seconds\, there is someone in the U.S. who needs blood\, which translates to the need for over 41\,000 daily donations. \nEach type of donation saves lives. While we may be able to donate blood\, platelets\, tissue\, marrow\, and some organs at any time\, most organs are donated upon death. A single donor can save up to 8 lives and help more than 75 people. \nSome blood donors have been making donations as young as the age of 17. They can donate a pint of blood every 53 days. One pint of blood can save up to three people. If you’ve never thought about donation\, you’re of the 17 percent of non-donors. DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day began as St. Valentine’s Day\, a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. February 14th first became associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages as the tradition of courtly love was then flourishing. Some point to martyred saints by the name of Valentine or Valentinus. Despite new technological advances\, meteorologists face challenges in predicting the weather. Even with the most state-of-the-art technology\, predicting “Mother Nature” and what path she may choose is a very daunting task. \nKnowing the weather forecast is valuable to us in so many ways. We often look at the forecast to plan our activities for the upcoming days. Recent severe weather statistics show that we continue to improve our capability to warn the public of impending hazardous weather. \nNationally\, lead time for flash flood warnings improved from 22 minutes in 1993 to 78 minutes in 2008. Accuracy over the same time period increased from 71 percent to 91 percent. Lead time for tornado warnings has increased from 6 minutes in 1993 to 13 minutes today. Tornado warning accuracy increased from 43 percent to 72 percent. Winter storm accuracy in 2008 was 89 percent with an average lead time of 17 hours. The day is celebrated each year in the United States and Canada. \n\n\n \n#NationalGroundhogDay\nTraditionally the groundhog awakens from his nap for a nice welcomed break during the winter to see if he can see his shadow. Many believe if the groundhog sees his shadow\, there will be six more weeks of winter. If this is so\, he retreats into his den and goes back to sleep. However\, if he does not see his shadow\, the groundhog remains outside to play\, and people celebrate\, believing spring is just around the corner. \nTradition\nThe tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday\, Candlemas. The clergy would bless candles symbolizing the ‘light of the world’ to give to their congregations. Another tradition associated with this day is eating crepes. Germans practiced the art of predicting the winter with a hedgehog. When they arrived in the United States\, they settled in the hills of Pennsylvania\, and the groundhog became the official predictor. \nPunxsutawney\, Pennsylvania\, has hosted the annual Groundhog day event. DESCRIPTION:Each year on January 31st\, National Hot Chocolate Day warms up people across the country by celebrating the timeless cold-weather beverage. \n#NationalHotChocolateDay\nHot chocolate is a warm beverage made with ground chocolate\, heated milk or water\, and sugar. In America\, we often use the terms hot chocolate and hot cocoa interchangeably. However\, the two beverages are different. \n\n\n \nCocoa vs Hot Chocolate \nWe make hot cocoa with cocoa powder\, heated milk or water\, and sugar. We’re able to do this thanks to a process developed by father and son chemists. For the thicker\, more flavorful beverage\, we make hot chocolate from ground chocolate containing cocoa butter. It is also called drinking chocolate. Hot chocolate has also been around longer than hot cocoa. In the early 1800s\, Casparus van Houten Sr. developed a process to separate the cocoa solids from the butter. His son\, Coenraad Johannes made those fats more soluble in water. Together their processes made cocoa powder possible. \nBut before then\, everyone drank hot chocolate. This thicker\, creamier beverage often offered medicinal benefits for stomach ailments during the 19th century. In fact\, long before the beverage’s popularity in Victorian times\, it served in ceremonial culture. \nHowever\, humans have been drinking chocolate for a long time. The Mayans likely created the first chocolate beverage 2000 years ago. The Aztecs also included a cocoa beverage as an essential part of their culture by 1400 AD. When Europeans began exploring Central and South America\, explorers brought chocolate and the beverage back with them to Europe from Mexico. \n\n\n \nMake it and Benefit\nHot chocolate can be enjoyed in a variety of combinations\, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows. Sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of peppermint makes the chocolate extra special. In the United States\, many people enjoy an instant form of hot chocolate. It is made with hot water or milk and a packet containing mostly cocoa powder\, sugar\, and dry milk. \nThere are health benefits to drinking hot chocolate. Cocoa contains significant amounts of antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Remembrance Day – Each year on January 27th\, the world remembers one of the most horrific events in modern history. This tragic event is known as the Holocaust. The holocaust occurred during WWII when Nazi Germany killed millions of innocent victims. The day is also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day. \n\n\n \n#HolocaustRemembranceDay\nNazi Germany is one of the evilest regimes that ever existed. They persecuted and killed millions of people in just under four years. One group in particular that suffered were those of the Jewish faith. It is believed that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews became a genocide. \nGenocide occurs when those of a particular ethnic group is deliberately killed. However\, the Nazis killed more than just Jews. Hundreds of thousands of other groups of people died under the evil regime. These included: \n\n7 million Soviet civilians\n3 million Soviet prisoners of war\n1.8 million Polish civilians\n312\,000 Serb civilians\nUp to 250\,000 people with disabilities\nUp to 250\,000 Gypsies\nAround 1\,900 Jehovah Witnesses\nPossibly thousands of homosexuals\n\nMost Jews died in concentration camps. The most notorious concentration camp is Auschwitz\, where approximately one million Jews died. While some of the Jews in the concentration camps died from disease or starvation\, others died in the gas chambers. Other groups of people were forced to live in ghettos where they died of sickness or starvation. Still\, others were rounded up\, shot\, and buried in mass graves. \nMany famous books and movies have been produced about the holocaust. One of the most famous books is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. The book is a real-life account of the two years that Anne Frank and her Dutch family hid from the Nazis. The family was discovered and deported to a concentration camp. Anne was 15 years old when she died in the camp from typhus. Other books include The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom\, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne\, and Born Survivors by Wendy Holden. Movies include Schindler’s List\, The Reader\, Denial\, and The Devil’s Arithmetic. \nThere are many other works\, such as theater productions\, music\, and poetry. Many of the works were created by victims and survivors of the holocaust. Other works commemorate the many heroes who helped save thousands of Jews and other victims from certain death. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY\nMany events are held throughout the world to commemorate this solemn day. The United Nations hosts a Holocaust memorial ceremony. The ceremony includes testimonies by Holocaust survivors\, special music\, and memorial prayers. There are also photographic exhibits\, panel discussions\, film screenings\, and book signings. Sadly\, there are some that try to deny the holocaust ever happened. This is one more reason to take part in this day. If the holocaust is forgotten or denied\, it will be easier for history to repeat itself. DESCRIPTION:National Chocolate Cake Day celebrates the cake more people favor. And more often than not\, we celebrate our special occasions like anniversaries\, birthdays and weddings with cake. Why not enjoy chocolate cake on January 27th every year? \n\n\n \n\n#ChocolateCakeDay\n\nIn America\, chocolate was consumed primarily as a beverage until the 1830s or 40s. Chocolate cakes\, as we think of them today\, mostly did not exist then.  According to the Dover Post\, the chocolate cake was born in 1765 when a doctor and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill.  They ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones to make a thick syrup. The liquid was poured into molds shaped like cakes\, which were meant to be transformed into a beverage.  A popular Philadelphia cookbook author\, Eliza Leslie\, published the earliest chocolate cake recipe in 1847 in The Lady’s Receipt Book.  Unlike chocolate cakes we know today\, this recipe used chopped chocolate.  Other cooks of the time such as Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa all made contributions to the development of the chocolate cake and were prolific authors of cookbooks. \nThe first boxed cake mix was created by a company called O. Duff and Sons in the late 1920s. Betty Crocker released their first dry cake mixes in 1947. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY\nWhen it comes to food holidays\, we know how to celebrate.
