SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. This January 16\, make the holiday more than just a day off and take time to reflect and take action on civil rights issues across the globe.\n\nMartin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January — on January 16 this year. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe concept of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday was promoted by labor unions. After King’s death\, U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke introduced a bill in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday. The bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979; however\, it fell five votes short of the number needed for passage. Two of the main arguments mentioned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive and that a holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to longstanding tradition\, as King never held public office. At the time\, only two other figures had national holidays honoring them: George Washington and Christopher Columbus. \n\n\n \nSoon after\, the King Center looked for support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released the single ‘Happy Birthday’ to popularize the campaign in 1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. Six million signatures were collected for a petition for Congress to pass the law and is considered the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history. \nPresident Reagan originally opposed the holiday\, citing cost concerns. But on November 2\, 1983\, Reagan signed a bill\, proposed by Representative Katie Hall\, to create a federal holiday honoring King. The bill had passed the Senate by a count of 78 to 22\, and the House of Representatives by 338 to 90. The holiday was observed for the first time on January 20\, 1986. It’s observed on the third Monday of January rather than directly on Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday because it follows the guidelines of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Life Day
DESCRIPTION:Though Celebration of Life Day\, which lands on January 22\, was originally instituted to celebrate the children in our lives\, it has come to signify all that’s good about being alive. It’s easy to forget sometimes\, but we are all fortunate to be here. Take time to celebrate that the good far outweighs the bad in this life. It all starts with gratitude and appreciation for where you are right now\, and wherever you hope your dreams take you. Every life is precious\, individual\, and a huge gift\, so take a little extra time today to celebrate it. \n\n\n \nThough Ronald Regan originally established the holiday to send an anti-abortion message\, the Celebration of Life Day has come to be a day to celebrate both the lives of children and ourselves. Celebration of Life Day was originally called National Sanctity of Human Life Day and was proclaimed in January 1984 by Ronald Regan. At the time\, President Regan chose to harken back to the landmark abortion case Roe v Wade by placing National Sanctity of Human Life Day on the 11-year anniversary of the decision on the case. \nAnti-abortion groups championed the holiday and felt that it expressed their sentiments on the importance of human life at all stages. This belief has been echoed in Donald Trump’s statement on the day from 2019. Organizations who champion the right to choose\, like Planned Parenthood\, denounced the day as a way of limiting women’s rights to autonomy over their bodies. \n\n\n \nThe history of National Sanctity of Human Life/Celebration of Life Day has been rocky. Though both Bush presidencies continued the holiday\, it was discontinued for eight years under President Bill Clinton. Donald Trump has continued the holiday throughout his presidency\, as well\, and some churches have even marked it as a holy day on their calendars. The holiday routinely falls on a Sunday for this religious reason\, although only in 2018 Donald Trump proclaimed it be celebrated on a Monday. \nToday\, many view the Celebration of Life Day as a day to spend extra time with their nieces\, nephews\, children\, grandchildren\, or even just kids they babysit. Every human life is precious\, and today is the day to remind ourselves we are all lucky to be here and lead the lives we do. Despite our individual and group challenges\, there is always good to be found and gratitude to be shown – and what better day to find the positive than Celebration of Life Day? \nSource Link

SUMMARY:Library Shelfie Day
DESCRIPTION:The fourth Wednesday in January offers a unique opportunity for book lovers on Library Shelfie Day. \n\n\n \n#LibraryShelfieDay\nSome collectors of books tend to arrange their collections so their spines can be admired pleasantly. Others have a system of organization that results in an alternative art form. However our books are organized on the shelf\, they are meant to be photographed and shared on social media. \nLibrary Shelfies offer book stores\, libraries\, schools\, and individuals an opportunity to express their reading preferences through a single photograph. Whether they frame their favorite authors\, titles\, genres or cover art\, readers share a bit of their library in creative ways. With or without dust jackets\, signed and unsigned\, dogeared and in mint condition\, bibliophiles love books of all kinds. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE LIBRARY SHELFIE DAY\nWhether you have a small library with a few select favorites or are a true bibliophile\, arrange your collection on a shelf and take a picture. Express your inner artist! Build a tower of babbling books or a wall of words. Invite others to join you in your aesthetically pleasing book-building adventure. Some suggestions include: \n\nArrange by color\nOrder books by height\, thickness\, width\nArrange book titles so they send a message\nStack books artistically\nPlace books in the order in which they were read\nRely on the good ol’ alphabetical order by author\nDisplay a biography only shelfie\n\nOnce you’ve taken your library shelfie\, visit a local library and check out theirs. You might find they’ve developed clever ways to entice you to new books and old ones\, too. Have fun displaying your collection in fun ways! Don’t forget to use #LibraryShelfieDay to share on social media. \nOnce you’ve shared your shelfie\, explore 8 Unique Libraries In The United States for more shelf inspiration. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Pie Day
DESCRIPTION:National Pie Day on January 23rd celebrates one of the Nations’ favorite desserts. No matter how you slice it\, pie in just about any form makes a crowd happy. Fruit pies\, berry pies\, cream pies – they are mouthwatering servings of homemade goodness. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n#NationalPieDay\n\n\n\nNational Pie Day simply celebrates the pie. Everyone is invited to bake their favorite pie\, but more importantly\, the day reminds us to enjoy eating pies! The only other question to ask is\, will it be al a mode? \nDid you know\, the first pies appeared around 9500 BC in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age? So\, humans have been eating pies for a very long time. And with so many to choose from\, we shouldn’t have any problem finding one we like. After all\, we celebrate the day twice a year (plus their cousin National Pi Day). \nFun Tidbit – Pie throwing:\nCream-filled or topped pies are favorite props for humor. Throwing a pie in a person’s face has been a staple of film comedy since Ben Turpin received one in Mr. Flip in 1909. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PIE  DAY\nCheck out our Celebration Deals page for the latest National Pie Day offers. If you know of a tasty Pie Day offer that isn’t listed yet\, Contact Us and let us know! We will get it listed as soon as possible. We don’t want you to miss out on a delicious slice. \nThe day also offers a perfect opportunity to give a shout-out to your favorite bakery. They always serve up the best and flakiest crusts. And we know\, sometimes that bakery is known as Grandma’s House. Use the holiday to honor her by learning to bake her best recipes. Take a lesson or two from the master! Or try a new recipe together. \nNo matter how you celebrate\, be sure to use #NationalPieDay to post on social media. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Peanut Butter Day
DESCRIPTION:National Peanut Butter Day on January 24th recognizes an American staple in our pantries. Whether creamy or chunky\, with chocolate or with jelly\, peanut butter gets the recognition it deserves each year on this day. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n#NationalPeanutButterDay\n\n\n\nThe early peanut butter made by the Aztecs and Incas around 1000 BC was more of a paste and not nearly as creamy as the peanut butter we know now. \nClick play and enjoy a story about National Peanut Butter Day featuring our founder\, Marlo Anderson. If you enjoy the 2-minute show\, subscribe with your favorite podcast player. \n\nPeanut butter didn’t become widely used until the 20th century. First\, the peanut had to be considered more than animal feed\, which wasn’t until the late 1800s. At the turn of the century\, inventions that made planting\, cultivating\, and harvesting the legume (the peanut isn’t a nut at all) made it possible to see the peanut as a retail and wholesale food item.\n\nPeanut butter is a good source of vitamin E\, B6\, niacin\, calcium\, potassium and iron\, is packed with protein and is rich in healthy monounsaturated fat. \n\n\n\n\nBringing Peanut Butter to the Masses\nWe can thank four men for the inventions and processes that bring us the creamy\, smooth peanut butter we enjoy today: Marcus Gilmore Edson of Canada\, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg\, Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis\, Missouri\, and chemist Joseph Rosefield. \nIn 1884\, Edson developed a process to make peanut paste from milling roasted peanuts between two heated plates. The famous cereal maker and health food specialist of the time\, Kellogg\, patented a process with raw peanuts in 1895. Dr. Straub is responsible for patenting a peanut butter making machine in 1903. \nPeanut butter was introduced to audiences at the 1904 Universal Exposition in St. Louis at C.H. Sumner’s concession stand. \nBut the man who brought us the peanut butter we know and love today was Joseph Rosefield. In 1922\, through homogenization\, Rosefield was able to keep peanut oil from separating from the peanut solids. He later sold the patent to a company that began making Peter Pan peanut butter. Rosefield then went into business for himself selling Skippy peanut butter through Rosefield Packing. He also supplied peanut butter for military rations during World War II. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER DAY\nMake your favorite peanut butter recipes. Whether it’s a sandwich or a baked good\, someone is sure to enjoy it with you. Be sure to share a photo or recipe using #NationalPeanutButterDay on social media. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Compliment Day
DESCRIPTION:National Compliment Day on January 24th offers a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day or to give credit for a job well done!  Give an extra compliment annually on January 24th and any time one is deserved. \n\n\n \n#NationalComplimentDay\nA compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child\, or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves the receiver’s mood\, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or their classic style\, a compliment can go a long way. \nTo give a great compliment\, first be sincere. People have a way of knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it\, it’s worse than getting a thoughtless birthday gift. \nComplimenting character versus a new haircut are different rewards. The first says you respect the person and the other tells them you paid attention. Sometimes the receiver needs to hear one or the other\, or both. \nHuman beings like to be unique\, original. Strive to give a compliment about what makes a person stand out above the rest. Take the time to reflect on what you admire about the person. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL COMPLIMENT DAY\nMake sure to compliment someone. Share the compliments you receive that make your day. Do they improve your day? Make a list of different ways to give a compliment and use #NationalComplimentDay to post on social media. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Irish Coffee Day
DESCRIPTION:National Irish Coffee Day kicks off January 25th each year with a mug of strong coffee\, Irish whiskey\, sugar\, and topped with a layer of cream. \n\n\n \n#NationalIrishCoffeeDay\nOn a cold\, wet day in 1942 weary travelers to the small Shannon Airport in southwest Ireland found their way to a restaurant and chef Joe Sheridan. To warm his guests\, he served them hot coffee\, spiked with whiskey and topped with whipped cream. The passengers asked if the beverage was Brazilian coffee. Sheridan responded that it was Irish coffee.\nClick play and enjoy a story about National Irish Coffee Appreciation Day featuring our founder\, Marlo Anderson.  If you enjoy the 2 minute show\, subscribe with your favorite podcast player. \nA travel writer\, Stanton Delaplane\, brought Irish coffee to the United States after having it at Shannon Airport. \nDelaplane brought the idea to the Buena Vista Cafe on November 10\, 1952. After much trial and error\, sampling\, and a trip back to Ireland for a taste of the original\, Delaplane\, along with Buena Vista owners Jack Koeppler and George Freeberg\, were able to replicate the delicious coffee and the method for floating the cream on top of the coffee. \nHow to Make an Authentic Irish Coffee\nStarting with a warm glass\, fill 2/3rds full of freshly brewed coffee. Stir in a heaping teaspoon of sugar.  Add 1 ounce of Irish whiskey. \nAdding the cream\, so it floats is the tricky part. According to the Buena Vista account\, and at the suggestion of San Francisco’s mayor\, a dairyman\, cream that is 48 hours old\, is best. However\, others recommend whipping cream (not whipped cream) that has been lightly whipped or foamed. \nWhen the coffee has stopped swirling from stirring in the sugar\, pour the foamy cream over the back of a spoon. \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL IRISH COFFEE DAY\nWarm up with an Irish coffee. Use #NationalIrishCoffeeDay to post on social media. \nIf you want to explore more cocktails and their history\, read A-Z Cocktail Origins. \n\n\n \nNATIONAL IRISH COFFEE DAY HISTORY\nNational Day Calendar continues researching the origins of this hot beverage celebration. While we do\, we hope you’ll enjoy a mug with a friend or two. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Chocolate Cake Day
DESCRIPTION:National Chocolate Cake Day celebrates the cake more people favor. And more often than not\, we celebrate our special occasions like anniversaries\, birthdays and weddings with cake. Why not enjoy chocolate cake on January 27th every year? \n\n\n \n\n#ChocolateCakeDay\n\nIn America\, chocolate was consumed primarily as a beverage until the 1830s or 40s. Chocolate cakes\, as we think of them today\, mostly did not exist then.  According to the Dover Post\, the chocolate cake was born in 1765 when a doctor and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill.  They ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones to make a thick syrup. The liquid was poured into molds shaped like cakes\, which were meant to be transformed into a beverage.  A popular Philadelphia cookbook author\, Eliza Leslie\, published the earliest chocolate cake recipe in 1847 in The Lady’s Receipt Book.  Unlike chocolate cakes we know today\, this recipe used chopped chocolate.  Other cooks of the time such as Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa all made contributions to the development of the chocolate cake and were prolific authors of cookbooks. \nThe first boxed cake mix was created by a company called O. Duff and Sons in the late 1920s. Betty Crocker released their first dry cake mixes in 1947. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY\nWhen it comes to food holidays\, we know how to celebrate. This one is no different. Have some cake. Share it with someone else. Visit your favorite bakery and give them some credit\, too. Or\, if you have some mean baking skills\, show them off! We want to see them\, too. That means\, share your recipes\, take some pictures\, make a video and show off those delicious\, chocolatey cakes! We love how you celebrate these days\, so celebrate them with us! \nSource Link

SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Remembrance Day – Each year on January 27th\, the world remembers one of the most horrific events in modern history. This tragic event is known as the Holocaust. The holocaust occurred during WWII when Nazi Germany killed millions of innocent victims. The day is also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day. \n\n\n \n#HolocaustRemembranceDay\nNazi Germany is one of the evilest regimes that ever existed. They persecuted and killed millions of people in just under four years. One group in particular that suffered were those of the Jewish faith. It is believed that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews became a genocide. \nGenocide occurs when those of a particular ethnic group is deliberately killed. However\, the Nazis killed more than just Jews. Hundreds of thousands of other groups of people died under the evil regime. These included: \n\n7 million Soviet civilians\n3 million Soviet prisoners of war\n1.8 million Polish civilians\n312\,000 Serb civilians\nUp to 250\,000 people with disabilities\nUp to 250\,000 Gypsies\nAround 1\,900 Jehovah Witnesses\nPossibly thousands of homosexuals\n\nMost Jews died in concentration camps. The most notorious concentration camp is Auschwitz\, where approximately one million Jews died. While some of the Jews in the concentration camps died from disease or starvation\, others died in the gas chambers. Other groups of people were forced to live in ghettos where they died of sickness or starvation. Still\, others were rounded up\, shot\, and buried in mass graves. \nMany famous books and movies have been produced about the holocaust. One of the most famous books is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. The book is a real-life account of the two years that Anne Frank and her Dutch family hid from the Nazis. The family was discovered and deported to a concentration camp. Anne was 15 years old when she died in the camp from typhus. Other books include The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom\, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne\, and Born Survivors by Wendy Holden. Movies include Schindler’s List\, The Reader\, Denial\, and The Devil’s Arithmetic. \nThere are many other works\, such as theater productions\, music\, and poetry. Many of the works were created by victims and survivors of the holocaust. Other works commemorate the many heroes who helped save thousands of Jews and other victims from certain death. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY\nMany events are held throughout the world to commemorate this solemn day. The United Nations hosts a Holocaust memorial ceremony. The ceremony includes testimonies by Holocaust survivors\, special music\, and memorial prayers. There are also photographic exhibits\, panel discussions\, film screenings\, and book signings. Sadly\, there are some that try to deny the holocaust ever happened. This is one more reason to take part in this day. If the holocaust is forgotten or denied\, it will be easier for history to repeat itself. Share this day on social media with #HolocaustRemembranceDay or #NeverForget. \nHOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY HISTORY\nOn January 24\, 2005\, the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. Later that year on November 1\, the UN General Assembly designated January 27th as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It is also referred to as Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was on January 27th in 1945 that Soviet troops liberated the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Plan for Vacation Day
DESCRIPTION:National Plan for Vacation Day\, on the last Tuesday in January\, reminds us to plan our vacation at the start of the year for the rest of the year. The early bird gets to pack their bags and fly away to a little fun and relaxation! \n\n\n \n\n\n\n#PlanForVacation\n\n\n\nWith the frigid temperatures and growing snow piles\, it’s easy to start daydreaming of sunny skies. Who else is dreaming of sandcastles and the vacation days to come? But\, for many Americans\, those vacation dreams turn out to be just that: a dream. \nEach year\, Americans leave more than 600 million vacation days unused. Our work martyr attitudes combined with a culture of silence in the workplace is keeping workers at their desks instead of using their time off. \nTo change this\, National Plan for Vacation Day reminds us to plan our vacation at the start of the year for the rest of the year. When it comes to taking a vacation\, it is the planners of the world who get the job done. Planners are more likely to take all their vacation time in a given work year and take more extended vacations than non-planners. They are also happier with their jobs\, relationships\, and health. So don’t knock the planners who get out the door to vacation! Get planning!! \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE PLAN FOR VACATION DAY\nThree Easy Steps to Planning a Vacation\nPlanning a vacation does not have to be a monumental task. Here are three easy steps to make it happen: \n\nDetermine how much time off you earn. Look up the number of vacation days you earn by checking with your finance or HR team. Don’t forget to make a note of any office closures.\nCoordinate calendars. Plot out your year—enter the number of days you earn\, put your vacation dreams on the calendar\, and use your custom link to get your family and friends involved in the planning.\nShare your plans. Once you have your days determined\, use the calendar to export your plans to Outlook\, Gmail\, or other electronic calendars to share with your boss\, co-workers\, and family.\n\nAs we close out a month of resolutions\, make this the year you focus on your bucket list—not your to-do list. \nGet ready to plan your vacation and use #PlanForVacation on social media. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Hot Chocolate Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on January 31st\, National Hot Chocolate Day warms up people across the country by celebrating the timeless cold-weather beverage. \n#NationalHotChocolateDay\nHot chocolate is a warm beverage made with ground chocolate\, heated milk or water\, and sugar. In America\, we often use the terms hot chocolate and hot cocoa interchangeably. However\, the two beverages are different. \n\n\n \nCocoa vs Hot Chocolate \nWe make hot cocoa with cocoa powder\, heated milk or water\, and sugar. We’re able to do this thanks to a process developed by father and son chemists. For the thicker\, more flavorful beverage\, we make hot chocolate from ground chocolate containing cocoa butter. It is also called drinking chocolate. Hot chocolate has also been around longer than hot cocoa. In the early 1800s\, Casparus van Houten Sr. developed a process to separate the cocoa solids from the butter. His son\, Coenraad Johannes made those fats more soluble in water. Together their processes made cocoa powder possible. \nBut before then\, everyone drank hot chocolate. This thicker\, creamier beverage often offered medicinal benefits for stomach ailments during the 19th century. In fact\, long before the beverage’s popularity in Victorian times\, it served in ceremonial culture. \nHowever\, humans have been drinking chocolate for a long time. The Mayans likely created the first chocolate beverage 2000 years ago. The Aztecs also included a cocoa beverage as an essential part of their culture by 1400 AD. When Europeans began exploring Central and South America\, explorers brought chocolate and the beverage back with them to Europe from Mexico. \n\n\n \nMake it and Benefit\nHot chocolate can be enjoyed in a variety of combinations\, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows. Sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of peppermint makes the chocolate extra special. In the United States\, many people enjoy an instant form of hot chocolate. It is made with hot water or milk and a packet containing mostly cocoa powder\, sugar\, and dry milk. \nThere are health benefits to drinking hot chocolate. Cocoa contains significant amounts of antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. Studies have shown the flavonoids in chocolate may have a positive effect on arterial health and memory. \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL HOT CHOCOLATE DAY\n\nMake some hot chocolate.\nAdd a variety of toppings.\nInvite a friend to join you for hot chocolate.\nSample different flavors of hot chocolate.\nTaste the difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa.\nTake a photo and use #NationalHotChocolateDay to post on social media.\n\nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Groundhog Day
DESCRIPTION:National Groundhog Day on February 2nd each year asks one question. Will he see his shadow? Ok\, well\, maybe it asks another question. Will there be six more weeks of winter? The day is celebrated each year in the United States and Canada. \n\n\n \n#NationalGroundhogDay\nTraditionally the groundhog awakens from his nap for a nice welcomed break during the winter to see if he can see his shadow. Many believe if the groundhog sees his shadow\, there will be six more weeks of winter. If this is so\, he retreats into his den and goes back to sleep. However\, if he does not see his shadow\, the groundhog remains outside to play\, and people celebrate\, believing spring is just around the corner. \nTradition\nThe tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday\, Candlemas. The clergy would bless candles symbolizing the ‘light of the world’ to give to their congregations. Another tradition associated with this day is eating crepes. Germans practiced the art of predicting the winter with a hedgehog. When they arrived in the United States\, they settled in the hills of Pennsylvania\, and the groundhog became the official predictor. \nPunxsutawney\, Pennsylvania\, has hosted the annual Groundhog day event. Thousands of people come to the town of Punxsutawney on Groundhog Day for this day of celebration. \nAlthough already a well-known day\, Groundhog Day received widespread attention due to the 1993 film Groundhog Day\, which was set in Punxsutawney and portrayed Roger Rininger as the groundhog. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL GROUNDHOG DAY\n\nWatch Punxsutawney Phil and see if he sees his shadow.\nMake your own prediction for National Groundhog Day.\nWatch a documentary about groundhogs.\nWatch Groundhog the movie. And then\, watch it again.\nRead the Farmer’s Almanac to determine the likelihood of an early spring. Does Phil agree?\nLook for your shadow.\nUse #NationalGroundhogDay on social media.\n\nNATIONAL GROUNDHOG DAY HISTORY\nAn early American reference to Groundhog Day can be found in a diary entry by storekeeper James Morris\, dated February 4th\, 1841\, of Berks County\, Pennsylvania. \n“Last Tuesday\, the 2nd\, was Candlemas day\, the day on which\, according to the Germans\, the groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap\, but if the day be cloudy he remains out\, as the weather is to be moderate.” \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Carrot Cake Day
DESCRIPTION:National Carrot Cake Day on February 3rd\, celebrates one of America’s favorite flavors of cake. In the carrot cake\, we get to eat our cake and veggies\, too! \n\n\n\n#NationalCarrotCakeDay\n\n\n\nCarrot cake closely resembles a quick bread from its preparation to its final consistency. Quick breads mix the wet and dry ingredients separately before combining\, and the final product is coarser than a traditional cake. Creamy frosting separates the layers and often complements the spice of the cake. Cinnamon and nutmeg go well with the natural sweetness of carrots. Many bakers add nuts or raisins to their recipes as well. \n\n\n \nThe carrot’s natural sweetness may have been selected as a substitute in the Middle Ages when sugar was hard to find or expensive. Carrot cake most likely developed from a carrot pudding which could be savory or sweet. \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL CARROT CAKE DAY\nBake a carrot cake to celebrate. Include friends and family by inviting them to join you. Serve a hot beverage or two. If you need a recipe\, we found several worth trying. While you’re enjoying the cake\, look ahead to other celebrations on the calendar.

SUMMARY:National Weatherperson’s Day
DESCRIPTION:Always celebrated on February 5th\, National Weatherperson’s Day (also known as National Weatherman’s Day) honors all individuals working in meteorology\, weather forecasting\, and broadcast meteorology. The day also recognizes volunteer storm spotters\, observers\, and others who work in the weather field. \nPOTW: Karen Conklin\, The English Center of Youngstown \n#WeatherpersonsDay\nThis annual holiday commemorates the birthday of John Jeffries\, born on this day in 1744. Dr. Jeffries\, a scientist and a surgeon\, is considered one of America’s first weather observers. He kept weather records from 1774 to 1816. Additionally\, Jefferies pioneered the field of ballooning in the United States and took his first balloon observation in 1784. \nDuring this celebration\, those honored work hard to accurately forecast and report the constantly changing and often unpredictable weather. Despite new technological advances\, meteorologists face challenges in predicting the weather. Even with the most state-of-the-art technology\, predicting “Mother Nature” and what path she may choose is a very daunting task. \nKnowing the weather forecast is valuable to us in so many ways. We often look at the forecast to plan our activities for the upcoming days. It affects what we do\, how we dress\, where we go\, or even if we go at all.   Being prepared for impending storms\, hurricanes or tornadoes saves lives. \nTiny Alabama Town Shocked to Learn Farmer had Secretly Paid People’s Pharmacy Bills for a Decade \nNATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE:\n“The primary mission of the Weather Service (NWS) forecast office is to provide the American public with the best possible warning service to save lives. Recent severe weather statistics show that we continue to improve our capability to warn the public of impending hazardous weather. \nNationally\, lead time for flash flood warnings improved from 22 minutes in 1993 to 78 minutes in 2008. Accuracy over the same time period increased from 71 percent to 91 percent. Lead time for tornado warnings has increased from 6 minutes in 1993 to 13 minutes today. Tornado warning accuracy increased from 43 percent to 72 percent. Winter storm accuracy in 2008 was 89 percent with an average lead time of 17 hours. Since 1990\, the Tropical Prediction Center’s 24 to 72-hour tropical storm forecast track errors have been reduced by more than 50%. These more accurate and longer lead time warnings help communities stay safe.” \nHOW TO OBSERVE WEATHERPERSONS DAY\nThank your local weatherperson. It may be the person you turn to on the news to keep you up to date on the latest storms. Or\, it may also be the storm spotters who report to the National Weather Service. Their warnings alert us to more imminent dangers. Weather changes often impact our lives and livelihoods\, so their dedication is valuable. Consider how weather affects our daily lives and how much you appreciate an accurate forecast whenever possible. Share your experiences and give a shout-out to the weatherperson doing an outstanding job in your area! \nUse #WeatherpersonsDay to post on social media. \nSource Link + Add New Category

SUMMARY:National Fettuccine Alfredo Day
DESCRIPTION:On February 7th\, National Fettuccine Alfredo Day celebrates one of the world’s favorite ways to enjoy a plate of fettuccine. \n\n\n \n#FettuccineAlfredoDay\nFettuccine alfredo enjoys a history as rich as its flavor. Created in 1908\, fettuccine was made out of love and concern by an Italian restauranteur. Alfredo di Lelio’s concern for his pregnant wife’s lack of appetite caused him to put his talents to work. The birth of their first son depended on it. His recipe of noodles\, cheese\, and butter not only encouraged her to eat but she also inspired him to put it on the menu\, too. Since then\, the century-old dish has been satisfying pasta lovers around the world ever since. \nNot only that but fettuccine alfredo lovers experiment with the dish in several ways. Add shrimp\, mushrooms or spinach. The meal also pairs well with other vegetables and proteins\, too. Cut the richness with a white wine and finish with a fruit dessert. \nHOW TO OBSERVE FETTUCCINE ALFREDO DAY\nCelebrate with a big dish of fettuccine Alfredo! Invite friends and family to join you\, too. As you know\, it’s not a celebration if you don’t. Make it yourself (we provide a recipe). Or\, go to your favorite Italian restaurant. When you do\, be sure to give them a shout out. \nWhile you’re celebrating\, share your photos\, recipes\, and more using #FettuccineAlfredoDay to post on social media. \n\n\n \nNATIONAL FETTUCCINE ALFREDO DAY HISTORY\nThe earliest printed record of the observance we’ve found is a January 26\, 2005\, Akron Beacon Journal article listing upcoming February food holidays. Several newspapers across the nation follow suit\, including the list in their food pages. But\, none of them included their source or how long the day has been celebrated. However\, the grandson of Alfredo Di Lelio contacted National Day Calendar in 2015 to provide the history behind the delicious pasta dish. We provide his letter below. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Send A Card To A Friend Day
DESCRIPTION:National Send A Card To A Friend Day on February 7th reminds us to send friendly cheer through the mail. We do that by sending a note or message on a card to the friends we hold dear. Throughout the year\, we often think about our friends. We wonder how they are\, miss them\, and remember fond memories of times shared. \n\n\n \n#SendACardToAFriendDay\nSending a card to someone for a variety of reasons dates back to ancient times. The Chinese would send elegantly designed messages as well as the Egyptians\, though on different types of paper. During the Rennaisance\, greeting cards gained popularity for specific holidays and events. Victorian times increased the use of the greeting card for Valentine’s Day\, Christmas\, birthdays\, and more. \nWhile our more digital era may turn away from the flowery language of greeting cards\, a surprising 80 percent of adults still purchase them. While they may only make these purchases for special occasions and are more likely to include them with a gift when they’re attending an event\, they are purchasing. That said\, retailers continue to reduce their footprint in the greeting card aisle. \nAll the facts would add up to a faster fading “Just Thinking of You” type of card. However nice it is to receive sweet text\, wouldn’t it be less of a chore to go to the mailbox if occasionally you found a notecard from a friend? \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE SEND A CARD TO A FRIEND DAY\nSend a card to your friends. You can buy cards at a store\, or you can make them yourself. Whichever way you choose\, set aside a few minutes to write a short note or a long note in a card and send one to make a friend’s day! Use #SendACardToAFriendDay to post on social media. \nNATIONAL SEND A CARD TO FRIEND DAY HISTORY\nNational Day Calendar continues researching the origins of this friendly holiday. As we do\, we’re also making friends that we need to send cards to\, too! \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Boys Scouts Day
DESCRIPTION:February 8th annually recognizes National Boys Scouts Day. Since 1910\, boys across America have been doing good deeds\, learning survival skills\, and developing moral foundations through the Boy Scout of America. \n\n\n \n#NationalBoyScoutsDay\nThe Boy Scouts of America has roots in the British Boy Scouts organization which was created in 1908 after the success of the book Scouting for Boys by Robert Baden-Powell. \nOn a foggy day in London an American newspaperman\, William Dickson Boyce\, became lost when a Boy Scout came to his assistance. With the boy’s guidance\, Boyce arrived at his destination. When Boyce offered payment for the assistance\, the Boy Scout refused explaining it was a good deed. \nBoyce was inspired to organize similar youth groups into one organization. On February 8\, 1910\, Boyce filed papers of incorporation\, and the Boy Scouts of America was born. \nBoy Scouts have had a profound impact on the United States.  Many presidents and other dignitaries have been Boy Scouts.  A total of 181 Astronauts have also been a part of the Boy Scout program. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day
DESCRIPTION:Valentine’s Day began as St. Valentine’s Day\, a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. February 14th first became associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages as the tradition of courtly love was then flourishing. During 18th century England\, this day evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers\, offering confectionery\, and sending Valentine cards.     \nSTN Inspirational Quotes To Keep You Inspired in 2023\n#ValentinesDay\nAncient History\nMixed opinions prevail regarding who or what was celebrated in mid-February. Some point to martyred saints by the name of Valentine or Valentinus. The most popular story tells of the saint who defied a decree by Emperor Claudius II who outlawed marriage for young men because he believed single men made better soldiers. St. Valentine\, preferring young lovers to be wed than have them sneaking around (or believing in the power of love)\, would marry them in secret. However\, it may have been another Valentine who performed the marriages. Either way\, at least two of them were beheaded for their actions \nAnother possible origin for Valentine’s Day takes us back to a pagan festival called Lupercalia. As a way to discourage participation in the fertility festival\, the Christian church placed St. Valentine’s Day in the middle of February. \nModern Celebrations\nSince the Renaissance\, we’ve been exchanging Valentine’s cards. These handmade missives of romance grew into a more commercial venture by the Victorian era. Today\, school children exchange Valentine’s greetings\, too. They prepare for the day by making unique boxes to receive their many hearts\, cupids\, and pun-filled rhymes. \nChocolates and candy have also become a part of the celebration. While couples tend to be the focus of the day\, singles celebrate being single\, too. Friends take each other out or reject the overall notion of Valentine’s Day. Dinner and a movie\, candlelight\, and flowers also fit the bill for couples. It’s one of the busiest days of the year for florists. \nFor the Love of Dogs\, Send a Special Furry Friend a Valentine This Year\nHOW TO OBSERVE VALENTINE’S DAY\n\nYou can surprise your special someone with flowers\, chocolate or a card.\nBring a smile to their face with an original poem or homemade meal.\nIf you’re short on ideas\, the Dating Divas offer a list of 115 Literal last-minute Valentine’s Day ideas to save your goose!\nGet something special for your Valentine and use #ValentinesDay to post on social media.\n\nVALENTINE’S DAY HISTORY\nCredit is traditionally given to Pope Gelasius for declaring February 14th as Saint Valentine’s Day around the year 496 to separate the church from the Roman celebration of Lupercalia\, an ancient pagan fertility festival that occurred on February 15th. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Donor Day
DESCRIPTION:Observed each year on February 14th\, National Donor Day (also known as  National Organ Donor Day) aims to increase awareness about organ donation and the lives it saves. In the United States\, more than 120\,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ donation. \nLocal Non-Profit Announces Tri-County Women of Impact\n#NationalDonorDay\nGive the gift of Life. \nThe observance focuses on five different types of donations:  Organs – Tissues – Marrow – Platelets – Blood.  Many nonprofit health organizations sponsor blood and marrow drives and organ/tissue sign-ups across the nation. Approximately every two seconds\, there is someone in the U.S. who needs blood\, which translates to the need for over 41\,000 daily donations. \nEach type of donation saves lives. While we may be able to donate blood\, platelets\, tissue\, marrow\, and some organs at any time\, most organs are donated upon death. A single donor can save up to 8 lives and help more than 75 people. \nSome blood donors have been making donations as young as the age of 17. They can donate a pint of blood every 53 days. One pint of blood can save up to three people. If you’ve never thought about donation\, you’re of the 17 percent of non-donors. However\, only 37 percent of the population of the United States is eligible to donate blood. \nHow You Can help the East Palestine Community: Spanning the Need Created a List of Resources for Individuals or Groups to Help\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL DONOR DAY\n\nSign up for blood donation.\nIf you’ve received the gift of an organ\, tissue\, marrow\, platelets\, or blood\, share your story.\nLook into becoming a donor. SUMMARY:National Red Sock Day
DESCRIPTION:Wear your red socks on National Red Sock Day to help save a life and limb! Did you know leg health can indicate risk for heart attack\, stroke\, and amputation? One in five adults over the age of 60 have a condition called Peripheral Artery Disease (P.A.D.)\, and many don’t even know they have it. National Red Sock Day on the Third Saturday in February raises awareness about P.A.D.\, its risk factors\, and what you can do. \n\n\n \n#NationalRedSockDay\nP.A.D. is caused by plaque build-up in the peripheral arteries\, mainly the arteries in the legs. It is the most debilitating disease many people have never heard of\, and yet\, it is responsible for nearly 200\,000 amputations annually. More than half of those amputations are preventable with early diagnosis and treatment. \nP.A.D. Symptoms\n\nLeg pain\nLeg cramps\nNeuropathy\nTingling\nNumbness\nNon-healing foot ulcers\n\nAdditionally\, 3 in 5 heart attack sufferers have P.A.D. This is why National Red Sock Day takes place in February\, which is also American Heart Month. \nP.A.D. Risk Factors\n\nDiabetes\nCardiovascular disease\nHigh blood pressure\nHigh Cholesterol\nSmoking\nObesity\nHereditary\n\nDiabetics are one of the highest risk groups with cases rising fast. More than half of American adults have Pre/Diabetes\, and the most prevalent complication is vascular. In fact\, 1 in 3 diabetics over 50 have P.A.D. However\, the most horrifying aspect of this disease is that most people don’t know they have it until it reaches its advanced stages. P.A.D. can lead to heart attack\, stroke\, and amputation. Diagnosis and appropriate treatment in early stages can help keep life and a limb healthy longer.  Diagnosis involves checking leg pulses in patients over age 50. \nNational Red Sock Day aims to raise awareness and encourage a candid conversation between patients and their physicians to test sooner for P.A.D. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL RED SOCK DAY\nWear your red socks on National Red Sock Day to help raise awareness about P.A.D. The red sock design symbolizes good circulation\, keeping life and limb healthy. The blue toe and heel indicate how poor circulation in the feet can indicate risk for heart attack\, stroke\, and amputation. Help The Way To My Heart expand critical life and limb saving P.A.D. education\, advocacy\, and support by purchasing official P.A.D. Awareness Socks at www.TheWayToMyHeart.org/Red-Sock-Day \nHave a conversation with your doctor about P.A.D. Make sure to report risk factors\, including a history of high blood pressure\, cardiovascular disease\, obesity\, diabetes\, and smoking. If you need help explaining your symptoms\, The Way to My Heart offers various resources to guide you. \nAnother way to participate is by donating to The Way to My Heart’s campaign. You can also follow The Way to My Heart on Facebook. \nAlso\, please share the word on social media using #NationalRedSockDay to help raise awareness. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Random Acts of Kindness Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year on February 17th\, National Random Acts of Kindness Day grows in popularity. It is celebrated by individuals\, groups\, and organizations nationwide to encourage acts of kindness. \n#RandomActsOfKindnessDay\nThe movement of Random Acts of Kindness inspires people every day. As a favorite celebration for many\, people everywhere are enjoying doing these acts of kindness. Not only do the acts of kindness bring joy to the receiver\, but they spread positive reactions to the giver\, too! \n\n\n \nOur research found that the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation celebrates Random Acts of Kindness Week. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is an internationally recognized non-profit organization founded upon the powerful belief in kindness and dedicated to providing resources and tools that encourage acts of kindness. \nIn New Zealand\, where this day originated\, Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated on September 1st. However\, it is also recognized by some on other days throughout the year. Nevertheless\, doing random acts of kindness is something that can be done every day of the year. \nA Few Quotes of Kindness: \n\n“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” (Mark Twain)\n“No act of kindness\, no matter how small\, is ever wasted.” (Aesop)\n“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” (Scott Adams)\n“Kind words and actions can seem so small\, but their effects are truly endless.” (Author Unknown)\n\n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY\n\nPay for the coffee or meal of the person in front of you in line.\nLeave a kind note for someone\, no explanation is needed.\nShare words of encouragement. You never know who might need them.\nPut your skills to work for someone in need. For example\, offer to create a résumé for someone seeking a new job.\nDrop off a load of groceries at the local food pantry.\nMail a “thinking of you” card to someone you’ve not to talk to in a while.\nOrder a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to anyone in the hospital. That means\, call the florist and tell them to pick a hospital or nursing home and deliver flowers to the person the front desk thinks needs it the most. It could be a sick child\, an elderly person with no family\, or a college student down on their luck.\nSend a thank-you note to the local fire department\, police departments\, or any military personnel.\nJust smile.\nShare your random acts of kindness using #RandomActsOfKindnessDay to post on social media.\n\nSource Link

SUMMARY:National Drink Wine Day
DESCRIPTION:While February 18th is observed annually as National Drink Wine Day\, it would be a shame to celebrate only one day a year. Perhaps this day is just a reminder to drink wine. \n\n\n \n#NationalDrinkWineDay\nWine does have its benefits after all. Moderate drinkers of wine have lower risks of liver disease\, type II diabetes\, certain kinds of cancers\, heart attack\, and stroke.  It also can reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good (HDL). \nDrinking wine includes other benefits as well. When paired with the right meal\, it enhances the flavors of spices\, fruits\, and sauces. A glass of wine helps relax us. Learning about wine keeps our minds sharp\, too. Since the fruits\, regions\, and the making of wine have such a complex story\, those who delve into find themselves traveling to learn more. \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY\n\nSince February 18th is also National Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day\, so we suggest a fresh\, fruity white wine pairing the celebrations together.\nAttend or host a wine tasting.\nTry a new wine.\nGive a bottle of wine to a friend.\nVisit a vineyard.\nRaise a toast to your favorite wine and let us know which one it is.\nAlways drink responsibly and try a new wine. Use #NationalDrinkWineDay to post to social media.\n\n\n\n \nNATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY HISTORY\nNational Day Calendar continues researching the origins of this celebratory day. However\, we’ve sipped a few wines and suspect either a winemaker or connoisseur created this day. \nSource Link

SUMMARY:President's Day
DESCRIPTION:On the third Monday in February\, the United States celebrates the federal holiday known as Presidents Day. The day takes place during the birth month of the country’s two most prominent presidents\, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. While the day once only honored President George Washington on his birthday\, February 22nd\, the day now never lands on a single president’s birthday. \nAcross the country\, most Americans know the day as Presidents Day. More and more of the population celebrates the day to honor all of the past United States Presidents who have served the country. Throughout the country\, organizations and communities celebrate the day with public ceremonies. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE PRESIDENTS DAY\n\nSome businesses close for the day\, including banks and federal buildings\, so make a note.\nCelebrate your favorite U.S. president.\nWatch a documentary about the POTUS. For example\, The Presidents by the History Channel.\nSee if you can name all the presidents in order.\nChallenge yourself to some presidential trivia:\n\n\nWho are the three presidents who served in 1841?\nForty years later\, this same phenomenon occurred again in 1881. Name the three presidents who served that year.\nName the three presidents who died on July 4th.\nWho were the four presidents who were assassinated while in office?\n\n\nUse #PresidentsDay to post on social media.\n\n\n\n \nPRESIDENTS DAY HISTORY\nThe origin of Presidents Day lay in the 1880s when the birthday of George Washington was celebrated as a federal holiday. In 1968\, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill. The bill moved several federal holidays to Mondays creating three-day weekends. During the debate on the bill\, one proposal suggested George Washington’s birthday be renamed Presidents Day to honor the birthdays of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Washington’s birthday is February 22nd and Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th. Although Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states\, it was never an official federal holiday. Following much discussion\, Congress rejected the name change. \nDespite the rejection\, soon after the bill went into effect in 1971\, and the observance of Washington’s birthday shifted to the third Monday in February\, gradually Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name. Over time\, the observance came to be known to many as a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln. However\, today another shift has occurred and many see the day as a celebration of all the U.S. Presidents. \nSource Link
