DESCRIPTION:According to a 1973 Sesame Street calendar\, Rubber Duckie’s Birthday is January 13th so around the country it’s National Rubber Ducky Day! A friend of Ernie and Big Bird\, Duckie made his debut in a February 1970 episode. \n\n\n \n#NationalRubberDuckyDay\nThe rubber ducky (also spelled duckie) has come a long way from his first concept as a chew toy for children. While the origin of the first rubber ducky is uncertain\, many rubber molded toys came about when rubber manufacturing developed in the late 1800s. They produced a variety of toys from dolls and various animal shapes\, including the rubber duck. \nIn 1928\, Landon Smart Lawrence received the earliest patent for a rubber duck toy. His clever design weighted the toy so that when it tipped it returned to an upright position. The sketch included with the patent was that of a duck. \nDuring World Wars I and II\, rubber was a valuable commodity. Rationing became mandatory and by the 1940s with the advent of plastic\, the rubber ducky began being produced in vinyl and plastic. Russian Sculptor Peter Ganine sculpted many animal figures. One\, a duck\, he later designed and patented into a floating toy that closely resembles the rubber ducky we have become familiar with today. \nSales of the iconic yellow rubber ducky we’ve come to know today soared in Britain in 2001. Why? A British Tabloid\, The Sun\, reported Queen Elizabeth II had a rubber duck in her bathroom that wore an inflatable crown. \nThe rubber ducky became a Toy Hall of Fame inductee in 2013. DESCRIPTION:Each year on the third Monday of January we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day and reflect on the work that still needs to be done for racial equality. King was an influential civil rights leader — best known for his work on racial equality and ending racial segregation in the United States. His life and achievements are remembered and celebrated on this day.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe concept of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday was promoted by labor unions. After King’s death\, U.S. Representative John Conyers and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke introduced a bill in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday. The bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979; however\, it fell five votes short of the number needed for passage. Two of the main arguments mentioned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive and that a holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to longstanding tradition\, as King never held public office. At the time\, only two other figures had national holidays honoring them: George Washington and Christopher Columbus. \n\n\n \nSoon after\, the King Center looked for support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released the single ‘Happy Birthday’ to popularize the campaign in 1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. Six million signatures were collected for a petition for Congress to pass the law and is considered the largest petition in favor of an issue in U.S. history. \nPresident Reagan originally opposed the holiday\, citing cost concerns. But on November 2\, 1983\, Reagan signed a bill\, proposed by Representative Katie Hall\, to create a federal holiday honoring King. The bill had passed the Senate by a count of 78 to 22\, and the House of Representatives by 338 to 90. The holiday was observed for the first time on January 20\, 1986. It’s observed on the third Monday of January rather than directly on Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday because it follows the guidelines of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

This particular corn variety has small ears\, and the kernels burst when exposed to dry heat. \nIn 1948\, small heads of Zea mays everta were discovered by Herbert Dick and Earle Smith in the Bat Cave of west central New Mexico. Ranging from smaller than a penny to about two inches\, the oldest Bat Cave ears were about 4\,000 years old. Several individually popped kernels were also discovered\, which have since been carbon dated and shown to be approximately 5\,600 years old. There’s also evidence of early use of popcorn in Peru\, Mexico\, and Guatemala\, as well as other places in Central and South America. \n\n\n \nAztecs used popcorn to decorate their clothes\, create ceremonial embellishments\, and also for nourishment. Native Americans have also been found to consume and utilize popcorn in their day to day lives. In a cave in Utah\, thought to be inhabited by Pueblo Native Americans\, popcorn has been found that dates back to over 1\,000 years ago. French explorers who traveled to the new world discovered popcorn being made by the Iroquois Natives in the Great Lakes region. As colonists moved around North America\, and as the USA came to be\, many people adopted popcorn as a popular and healthy snack.

In the U.S\, one-third of all milk produced in this country goes into cheese production. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry! We’re ready to celebrate it. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWe celebrate and explore the wonderful flavors of cheese on National Cheese Lovers Day on January 20. \nIt seems like cheese has been around forever. There aren’t any records pinpointing the exact event when cheese was created\, but the earliest record of pasteurizing cheese dates back to 5500 B.C. in the geographical region that’s now Poland. The earliest cheeses were mostly cottage cheese churned at home\, and this is likely how cheesemaking started. \nThousands of years ago\, milk was transported by people by storing it in the stomachs of sheep. When left for a few days\, the milk would separate into whey and curd. Retaining this residue and preserving it with salt led to the formation of cheese. Today\, there are more than 1\,800 types of cheese in the world. \n\n\n \nThe rest of the history of cheese is as extravagant and full of flavor as cheese itself. Enjoyed by royalty\, the poor\, and modern-day consumers\, there is something for everyone. Some parts of the world are very secretive about their cheese heritage\, keeping the ingredients and techniques private. \nCheesemaking itself is a very sensitive process. Everything from the environment\, to the temperature of the milk will impact the taste and aroma of the cheese.

Celebration of Life Day was originally called National Sanctity of Human Life Day and was proclaimed in January 1984 by Ronald Regan. At the time\, President Regan chose to harken back to the landmark abortion case Roe v Wade by placing National Sanctity of Human Life Day on the 11-year anniversary of the decision on the case. \nAnti-abortion groups championed the holiday and felt that it expressed their sentiments on the importance of human life at all stages. This belief has been echoed in Donald Trump’s statement on the day from 2019. Organizations who champion the right to choose\, like Planned Parenthood\, denounced the day as a way of limiting women’s rights to autonomy over their bodies. \n\n\n \nThe history of National Sanctity of Human Life/Celebration of Life Day has been rocky. Though both Bush presidencies continued the holiday\, it was discontinued for eight years under President Bill Clinton. Donald Trump has continued the holiday throughout his presidency\, as well\, and some churches have even marked it as a holy day on their calendars. The holiday routinely falls on a Sunday for this religious reason\, although only in 2018 Donald Trump proclaimed it be celebrated on a Monday. \nToday\, many view the Celebration of Life Day as a day to spend extra time with their nieces\, nephews\, children\, grandchildren\, or even just kids they babysit. Every human life is precious\, and today is the day to remind ourselves we are all lucky to be here and lead the lives we do. At the turn of the century\, inventions that made planting\, cultivating\, and harvesting the legume (the peanut isn’t a nut at all) made it possible to see the peanut as a retail and wholesale food item.\n\nPeanut butter is a good source of vitamin E\, B6\, niacin\, calcium\, potassium and iron\, is packed with protein and is rich in healthy monounsaturated fat. \n\n\n\n\nBringing Peanut Butter to the Masses\nWe can thank four men for the inventions and processes that bring us the creamy\, smooth peanut butter we enjoy today: Marcus Gilmore Edson of Canada\, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg\, Dr. Ambrose Straub of St. Louis\, Missouri\, and chemist Joseph Rosefield. \nIn 1884\, Edson developed a process to make peanut paste from milling roasted peanuts between two heated plates. The famous cereal maker and health food specialist of the time\, Kellogg\, patented a process with raw peanuts in 1895. Dr. Straub is responsible for patenting a peanut butter making machine in 1903. \nPeanut butter was introduced to audiences at the 1904 Universal Exposition in St. Louis at C.H. Sumner’s concession stand. \nBut the man who brought us the peanut butter we know and love today was Joseph Rosefield. In 1922\, through homogenization\, Rosefield was able to keep peanut oil from separating from the peanut solids. He later sold the patent to a company that began making Peter Pan peanut butter. Rosefield then went into business for himself selling Skippy peanut butter through Rosefield Packing. To warm his guests\, he served them hot coffee\, spiked with whiskey and topped with whipped cream. The passengers asked if the beverage was Brazilian coffee. After much trial and error\, sampling\, and a trip back to Ireland for a taste of the original\, Delaplane\, along with Buena Vista owners Jack Koeppler and George Freeberg\, were able to replicate the delicious coffee and the method for floating the cream on top of the coffee. \nHow to Make an Authentic Irish Coffee\nStarting with a warm glass\, fill 2/3rds full of freshly brewed coffee. Stir in a heaping teaspoon of sugar.  Add 1 ounce of Irish whiskey. \nAdding the cream\, so it floats is the tricky part. According to the Buena Vista account\, and at the suggestion of San Francisco’s mayor\, a dairyman\, cream that is 48 hours old\, is best. DESCRIPTION:National Chocolate Cake Day celebrates the cake more people favor. And more often than not\, we celebrate our special occasions like anniversaries\, birthdays and weddings with cake. Why not enjoy chocolate cake on January 27th every year? \n\n\n \n\n#ChocolateCakeDay\n\nIn America\, chocolate was consumed primarily as a beverage until the 1830s or 40s. Chocolate cakes\, as we think of them today\, mostly did not exist then.  According to the Dover Post\, the chocolate cake was born in 1765 when a doctor and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill.  They ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones to make a thick syrup. The liquid was poured into molds shaped like cakes\, which were meant to be transformed into a beverage.  A popular Philadelphia cookbook author\, Eliza Leslie\, published the earliest chocolate cake recipe in 1847 in The Lady’s Receipt Book.  Unlike chocolate cakes we know today\, this recipe used chopped chocolate.  Other cooks of the time such as Sarah Tyson Rorer and Maria Parloa all made contributions to the development of the chocolate cake and were prolific authors of cookbooks. \nThe first boxed cake mix was created by a company called O. Duff and Sons in the late 1920s. Betty Crocker released their first dry cake mixes in 1947. \n\n\n \nHOW TO OBSERVE CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY\nWhen it comes to food holidays\, we know how to celebrate. They persecuted and killed millions of people in just under four years. One group in particular that suffered were those of the Jewish faith. It is believed that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The Nazis’ persecution of the Jews became a genocide. \nGenocide occurs when those of a particular ethnic group is deliberately killed. However\, the Nazis killed more than just Jews. Hundreds of thousands of other groups of people died under the evil regime. These included: \n\n7 million Soviet civilians\n3 million Soviet prisoners of war\n1.8 million Polish civilians\n312\,000 Serb civilians\nUp to 250\,000 people with disabilities\nUp to 250\,000 Gypsies\nAround 1\,900 Jehovah Witnesses\nPossibly thousands of homosexuals\n\nMost Jews died in concentration camps. The most notorious concentration camp is Auschwitz\, where approximately one million Jews died. While some of the Jews in the concentration camps died from disease or starvation\, others died in the gas chambers. Other groups of people were forced to live in ghettos where they died of sickness or starvation. Still\, others were rounded up\, shot\, and buried in mass graves. \nMany famous books and movies have been produced about the holocaust. One of the most famous books is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. The book is a real-life account of the two years that Anne Frank and her Dutch family hid from the Nazis. This thicker\, creamier beverage often offered medicinal benefits for stomach ailments during the 19th century. In fact\, long before the beverage’s popularity in Victorian times\, it served in ceremonial culture. \nHowever\, humans have been drinking chocolate for a long time. The Mayans likely created the first chocolate beverage 2000 years ago. The Aztecs also included a cocoa beverage as an essential part of their culture by 1400 AD. However\, if he does not see his shadow\, the groundhog remains outside to play\, and people celebrate\, believing spring is just around the corner. \nTradition\nThe tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday\, Candlemas. The clergy would bless candles symbolizing the ‘light of the world’ to give to their congregations. Another tradition associated with this day is eating crepes. Germans practiced the art of predicting the winter with a hedgehog. When they arrived in the United States\, they settled in the hills of Pennsylvania\, and the groundhog became the official predictor. \nPunxsutawney\, Pennsylvania\, has hosted the annual Groundhog day event. Despite new technological advances\, meteorologists face challenges in predicting the weather. Even with the most state-of-the-art technology\, predicting “Mother Nature” and what path she may choose is a very daunting task. \nKnowing the weather forecast is valuable to us in so many ways. We often look at the forecast to plan our activities for the upcoming days. DESCRIPTION:February 8th annually recognizes National Boys Scouts Day. Since 1910\, boys across America have been doing good deeds\, learning survival skills\, and developing moral foundations through the Boy Scout of America. \n\n\n \n#NationalBoyScoutsDay\nThe Boy Scouts of America has roots in the British Boy Scouts organization which was created in 1908 after the success of the book Scouting for Boys by Robert Baden-Powell. \nOn a foggy day in London an American newspaperman\, William Dickson Boyce\, became lost when a Boy Scout came to his assistance. With the boy’s guidance\, Boyce arrived at his destination. When Boyce offered payment for the assistance\, the Boy Scout refused explaining it was a good deed. \nBoyce was inspired to organize similar youth groups into one organization. On February 8\, 1910\, Boyce filed papers of incorporation\, and the Boy Scouts of America was born. \nBoy Scouts have had a profound impact on the United States.  Many presidents and other dignitaries have been Boy Scouts.  A total of 181 Astronauts have also been a part of the Boy Scout program. \nSource Link
