Their unique quality makes them feel awkward. They bump elbows or seem like a klutz. However\, in a world designed for the right-handed\, those who are other dominant adapt quite well. For example\, eight United States presidents were left-handed\, including Ronald Reagan\, George H.W. Bush\, Bill Clinton\, and Barack Obama. Would the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa stand the test of time if Michaelangelo and Leonardo de Vinci had been right-handed? \nUncommon Individual\nLeft Handers Day recognizes the uncommon individual who throws\, catches\, writes\, and uses a fork with their left hand. They view the world just a little differently\, too. At a restaurant\, they seek out the seat that will place their dominant elbow on the outside of the booth. Right-handed athletes groan a bit when the southpaw shows up as an opponent on the roster. They present a challenge right-handers aren’t always sure how to handle due to lack of practice. July 25 at 7:00pm at Salem High School. \nThis production tells the story of the American soldier through fourteen characters based on real people\, actual letter\, and true experiences spanning from the American Revolution to present day. The play captures the discipline\, teamwork\, and brotherhood of military service while also examining the internal struggles soldiers face when returning home. Audiences meet a Revolutionary War soldier freezing at Valley Forge\, a WW11 veteran haunted by Iwo Jima\, a grieving Vietnam-era mother\, an Iraq veteran struggling to adjust to civilian life\, a family coping with repeated deployments and many others. Together these stories present a moving tribute to sacrifice\, service and survival. \nAs we approach the 250th Anniversary of our nation\, this performance serves as a time capsule –asking an important question: What do we\, as civilians\, owe those who have protected our freedom? This is a message for all ages\, military and non-military alike\, to better understand and honor the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families. \nThe production has been performed at the Kennedy Center\, Library of Congress\, Off-Broadway in New York\, and in 42 cities across the United States. This is truely and eye opener for all of us to resect and give thanks to our Military. \nYou will receive a America 250 commemorative ticket at the door. DESCRIPTION:The Butler Institute of American Art is honored to host this special concert event celebrating the life and legacy of Danny Simmons through an inspiring evening of poetry\, rhythm\, and artistic expression. The event will be held on Saturday\, July 25 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Doors open at 5:45pm. \nFor over four decades\, Danny Simmons had created paintings\, works on paper\, and assemblages informed by the spirit imbued in indigenous and African cultures. As the founder of the artistic movement Neo-African Abstract Expressionism\, Simmons reclaimed traditional African motifs. Simmons was also an author\, poet\, philanthropist\, curator\, co-creator of Def Poetry Jam\, and co-founder of the renowned Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. \nDef Poetry Jam originally aired on HBO between 2002 and 2007. The series featured performances by established and up-and-coming spoken word poets as well as famous actors and musicians. Through the efforts of Bruce George\, Deborah Pointer\, and Danny Simmons\, the Def Poetry Jam concept was key in advancing the cultural importance of spoken word poetry. The show has won a Peabody Award and a Tony Award. \nFeatured performers in the event’s lineup include Ursula Rucker\, Derick D.
